Why Grab asks for a phone number

Grab is phone-first across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines: the number is your login, your driver's contact route, and the key to GrabPay. Registration is not possible without receiving an SMS code.

Grab also localises heavily — an account registered in one country behaves differently in another.

Before you start

Register with a number from the country you'll actually be in — Grab ties the account to a home market, and a mismatched number can leave you unable to book rides locally. GrabPay top-ups usually need a local card or bank account, so plan to pay by card or cash if you are visiting.
